The theme for Mid Year's Dinner was "Americana"; members and friends were asked to dress up in anything from the good old U S of A, and some awesome costumes were seen on the night. The Club also built and painted up timber props to add a bit more to the theme: a Post Office, Wild West Saloon and Jailhouse [for any misbehaving patrons].
This year's dinner was a 3 course affair, with a choice of pork spare ribs or chicken nibbles to start, follow by a buffet main and a choice of 3 yummy desserts to finish.
42 members and visitors enjoyed a cocktail at the beginning of the evening, then sat down to have their entree served to them. The main consisted of a roast beef and a lovely glazed ham, roasted pumpkin and kumara, with a mix of vegetables and gravy.
Then dessert: Key lime pie, Eaton mess and good old American apple pie rounded off a lovely meal before the start of.........
RAPERE'S GOT TALENT
Our MC for the night somehow kept the entertainers on track and filled in the spots between Acts with jokes. We had Slim Dusty singing a couple of western songs.
Then the Village People Cover Band, put in a surprise appearance and performed "YMCA" and finished with "In The Navy", which had one of our club members joining them on stage towards the end of the song, wearing a navy outfit, as a "new Recruit". All in all, it was an excellent evening.
Rallywood has been and gone, leaving us with great memories. In keeping with the theme every event was associated with a movie. The Opening Ceremony included a skit from the movie M*A*S*H, complete with drum rolls, gunfire, canon fire and misfires.
A full sports program was completed with no hiccups in some very hot weather. Additional sports activities included archery (Robin Hood), a confidence course challenge (GI Joe), water volleyball and the water slide (Titanic).
Live entertainment included blues group Men In Black, Irish-country group In Like Flynn and theatre group 3 In a Row. There was beer tasting and a market day to tempt the appetites.
The Blues Brothers and the Rocky Horror Picture Show movies were shown on the big screen in the marquee. A mystery trip took a group of 45 to The Globe Theatrette in Napier for nude pizza and movie screening - as far as we know the first time this has been done in New Zealand. Tjose who didn't go on the mystery trip had the option of a movie-themed quiz, which was hotly contested.
Off grounds trips during and after the rally included a 4WD trip to the hot springs at Mangatutu, a walk to the top of the hill behind the grounds and a self-drive wine tour.
The Oscars night came complete with red carpet, Bunny Girls, bouncers, an Oscar statue, awards, and a fantastic catered dinner prepared by Taranaki Naturist Club.
Thanks to the hard-working rally crew and to everyone else who helped out during the week.
For years we've had problems with the roadways at Rapere especially over the wet months when rain and runoff ravages the surface, requiring many hours of repair work.
At our last AGM the club resolved to make a start on sealing the main roads. The first stage of this work is now complete and you can see below what an undertaking this was a wonderful improvement.
